Arriving at Villa Paradou feels a bit like being given the keys to a secret garden, enclosed by walls, trees and hedges for privacy and filled with colourful Mediterranean plants. It’s quietly chic and perfectly Provençal, from the pétanque pitch to the farmhouse-style kitchen complete with white-washed beams. Step out of the kitchen and you find yourself on a large, covered terrace with seating and dining areas, with the pool, sun terrace and a big lawned garden beyond. It’s paradise for active kids, and equally appealing for an adult party looking for a village base within striking distance of Saint-Rémy, Les Baux-de-Provence, Arles and all the many other highlights of the scenically stunning Alpilles region.

The local area

Paradou is tiny, but has a handy mini-market as well as a couple of restaurants and a café, so you can get what you need within the very local area. For supermarket shopping, the nearest is at Fontvielle, a 10-minute drive. Alternatively we suggest Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (20min drive), a very attractive small town with a vast array of restaurants and speciality shops. Wednesday is market day, with stalls piled high with fresh local food, linens, ceramics and flowers - wonderfully photogenic even if you don’t want to shop. This region is Van Gogh country, and you can tour the Van Gogh route from Arles, where he painted some of the Roman sites and the celebrated Van Gogh bridge, to Saint-Rémy where he spent his last days at the Monastery Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and painted two of his most famous works: The Starry Night and Irises. And even if art is not on the agenda, Arles (30min drive) is well worth a visit for its impressive Roman sites and charming town centre.

There's no better way to while away leisurely holiday hours than by visiting the many Provençal villages with their cobbled streets and cafés. Hilltop towns glow in pale golden stone, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and fields of fragrant purple lavender. From celebrated Gordes to charming Eygalières, each town has a market to help you discover local produce, or treat yourself to a long lazy lunch; from pavement cafés to Michelin stars, the midday meal in France is nothing short of an art form.

The cities of Avignon, Orange, Nîmes and Arles offer an architecturally rich and cultural day out but try to make time for lesser-known gems like Vaison la Romaine, Uzès and Ile sur la Sorgue for a less crowded but equally impressive picture of the history of the region.

A day at the beach is always an option but you can find other open water options closer to home, from child-friendly paddling in the River Gardon below le Pont du Gard, to kayaking down La Sorgue as it winds its way through the Luberon. Close to Avignon, Lac de Monteux has a lifeguarded beach and various water activities for all ages.

This is a destination to rival any other. Complemented by our selection of handpicked villas we can help you make the most of your luxury holiday in Provence.
