The local area

You can reach the town centre in about 10 minutes by bike; here shopping, brunching, watersports and water parks are all on the agenda, and if you have older children it’s a lively but safe-feeling space for them to spend some time away from mum and dad if they wish. Surf culture is all around, but if that’s not your thing, there are plenty of alternatives, whether you fancy a leisurely day cycling through pine forests, browsing a bustling bric-a-brac market or oyster tasting by the lake. Neighbouring Capbreton has a more authentically French feel and, around the marina, you’ll find some of the area’s best fish restaurants, as well as a daily fish market if you fancy eating in.

Bayonne, famed for its fine chocolate and cured hams, is a half-hour drive away whilst world renowned Biarritz lies a little further south and offers a slightly more traditional feel with its fading Belle Époque buildings alongside surf shops and sushi cafés. Head into the Basque country for a glimpse of this area’s rich cultural heritage, or take a day to visit the pretty fishing port of St-Jean-de-Luz, the culinary capital of the region.
