Responsible Tourism: why going local is a win-win for everyone

As a specialist business we pride ourselves on excellent relationships with our local suppliers, many of whom we have worked with for well over a decade. The most obvious benefit is that these trusted partners prioritise Simpson Travel guests, resulting in the kind of personal service that only local connections can bring. Indeed, our guest questionnaires are full of comments from clients delighted to be given the best table in the house, preferential rates for hire services and other little privileges that money just can’t buy. We’re also very conscious of our impact in each of our host destinations, and we recognise that one key pillar of responsible tourism is working with local businesses. From sourcing goods, services and materials locally to providing support and investment for sensitive, small-scale developments, going local helps preserve cultural identities and boost regional economies so that everyone benefits. And as an added but no less important bonus, our guests enjoy a more authentic travel experience.

Strategies and policies are all very well, but what does this look like in reality? Read on to discover some of our most cherished partnerships, and why they are so important.

CORSICA

Handmade hamper items

Our welcome packs are a great way for us to introduce our guests to traditional local produce and support small businesses. In Corsica, we source classic canistrelli biscuits from a mother-and-daughter enterprise in a tiny Balagne village. The deliciously moreish biscuits are made to a family recipe, and guests often ask where they can get more to take home. We also provide soaps and toiletries which are handmade on the island using Corsican flower essences and oils that capture the unmistakable scent of the maquis. By buying local, we’re able to reduce our carbon footprint and support two businesses committed to sustainable production in the fragile natural environment of Corsica.

FRANCE

Brilliant bikes and boards

Cycling and surfing are synonymous with the Aquitaine coast, and for those who don’t want to bring their own kit, we’re proud to partner with Jerry Bikes. There are many companies offering rental in the region, but we recommend Jerry Bikes for their professionalism and outstanding customer service, which includes delivering bikes to your villa on request and a discount for Simpson Travel guests. There’s no greener way to get around on holiday than on a bike, and to keep the impact as low as possible, most of Jerry’s bikes are made in France.

MALLORCA

Top tasting notes

Lots of our guests are keen to try local food and drinks, but unfamiliar grape varieties can be a bit of a challenge when you’re in a new place. In Mallorca, Ivan and Lara organise visits to their favourite bodegas, which can be tailored to the kinds of wines you enjoy. Alternatively, Ivan can come to your villa with a selection of wines for you to taste, which can be combined with a private chef meal for a really special evening. In bypassing the usual supermarket offerings, you’ll get a real taste of authentic Mallorca wines, so you can order with confidence next time you’re out for dinner, and support boutique vineyards at the same time.

CORFU

The best boats around

Hiring a motor boat is arguably the ultimate Greek island holiday experience, and even in the calm, clear waters of Corfu, it’s absolutely essential to rent from a reputable company. We’ve worked with San Stefano boats for many years; as a family-run firm, their local knowledge is unbeatable and unlike most other agencies, all their boats are brand new every season. This means maximum comfort, enjoyment and safety for all, and by investing in the latest technology, San Stefano boats minimise their noise and environmental impact. Owner Eleanora and her husband are also generous supporters of our Corfu charity initiatives.

CRETE

Unleash your inner artist

Tourism can threaten traditional culture, but in the Apokoronas village of Gavalochori, local arts and crafts are flourishing, with a vibrant community of painters, ceramicists, photographers, writers and musicians all working hard to keep their art alive and the village thriving. You can support their work by shopping in the village, or by booking a painting lesson with Francesca Harrison. Suitable even for complete beginners, Francesca can coax out the artist in anyone, and you’ll have a unique watercolour to take home with you as a memory of your stay.

By putting local businesses first, we aim to deliver holidays that benefit the wider community and make our presence not just viable but desirable, ensuring a secure future for our partners and unforgettable holidays for our guests.
